About Jess Poland

I am sparked by the natural world, and marvel at how nature creates artistic masterpieces all the time, every day. Often it is color shifts and textures in nature that inspire me the most: crystal frost on a branch, the pattern of lichen on a rock, or subtle color differences of river rocks. Art-making is a respite to me from the busy world because I can slip into the same place of quiet that I experience when I’m in nature. Impressions from my youth in Indiana and decades hereafter in the NC Piedmont imprint my memories and often find their ways into my artwork. I am interested in themes of fragility and beauty.

Monoprinting creates accidental surprises and results in mysterious marks which seem not to be made by my hand, whereas the luminous and plaster-like qualities of casein paint allow me to explore my fascination with color and light.

In addition to being a painter and printmaker, I have worked full-time as a nonprofit administrator for the past 22 years; 11 years for Triangle Land Conservancy, and the past 11 for The American Civil Liberties Union Capital Punishment Project.

I live in Durham, North Carolina, with my husband, 2 kids, and 3 pet rabbits.
